"How long will I live?" is one of the most searched questions about age โ and one of the least answerable. Life expectancy calculators are popular, sometimes useful for planning, and universally misunderstood. What they produce is a statistical average for people who resemble you, not a forecast about you. Understanding the difference makes the number genuinely useful for retirement and financial planning, and stops it being alarming.
How life expectancy is calculated
Life expectancy comes from a life table (also called an actuarial table) โ a statistical tool that governments and insurers have used since the 17th century. It works from observed mortality rates: for each age, what proportion of people at that age died within the year. Apply those rates step by step to a hypothetical group of 100,000 newborns and you can compute the average number of remaining years at every age.
Two versions exist. Period life expectancy โ the figure usually quoted in news reports โ applies today's mortality rates as if they'll stay frozen forever. Cohort life expectancy projects that mortality rates will keep improving, and generally produces a higher, more realistic figure for people alive now. Why your life expectancy goes up as you get older
This surprises people. If life expectancy at birth in your country is 80, and you're already 75, you don't have five years left on average โ you have closer to twelve. The reason is simple: life expectancy at birth is dragged down by everyone who dies young. Having reached 75, you've already survived all those risks, so your remaining expectancy is computed only among fellow 75-year-olds.

Figures are broad illustrative ranges that vary by country and sex โ women's life expectancy exceeds men's in essentially every country, typically by around four to six years. Check your own national statistics office for current figures.
What longevity calculators add to the table
A basic calculator returns your national average for your age and sex. A more sophisticated one adjusts that baseline using factors with established links to mortality risk in epidemiological research: smoking status, blood pressure, BMI, physical activity, alcohol intake, diabetes, and family history. The output is your cohort's adjusted average โ people sharing your risk profile โ which is more informative than the national number but still a group statistic.
These adjustments come with real uncertainty. Self-reported inputs are imprecise, models are built on historical data that may not describe future medicine, and individual genetics and luck are unmodellable. Treat a longevity estimate as a rough planning input, not a countdown.
What research links to living longer
The evidence here is unusually consistent, and unusually unglamorous. Large cohort studies repeatedly identify the same modifiable factors:
- Not smoking โ the single largest modifiable factor in most populations; quitting produces measurable risk reduction at any age.
- Regular physical activity โ cardiorespiratory fitness is among the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality. See our guide to fitness age.
- Diet quality โ patterns rich in vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and unsaturated fats consistently outperform highly processed diets in cohort research.
- Healthy weight and metabolic health โ blood pressure and blood glucose control in particular.
- Moderate or no alcohol โ the once-assumed protective effect of light drinking has weakened considerably under better-designed studies.
- Sleep โ both short and very long habitual sleep associate with higher mortality; around seven to nine hours suits most adults.
- Social connection โ meta-analyses find social isolation carries mortality risk comparable to several classic physical risk factors.
Note these are population-level associations, not guarantees for any individual. They also interact with factors nobody chooses โ genetics, income, healthcare access, and environment all shape outcomes substantially.
Where the number is genuinely useful
Life expectancy earns its keep in planning rather than prophecy:
