In the traditional Korean age system, a person is considered 1 year old at birth (counting time in the womb), and everyone gains a year on January 1st rather than their actual birthday. This system has roots in East Asian traditions.
South Korea officially moved to the international age system for legal purposes in June 2023. However, Korean age is still widely used in everyday conversation and social contexts.
