About this tool

Your exact age, from just your date of birth

An age calculator answers a question that sounds simple but rarely is: how old am I, exactly? Most of us know our age in years, but the moment a form, a doctor, or plain curiosity asks for months and days — or your age on a date other than today — the mental arithmetic falls apart. Months have four different lengths, leap years add a day when you least expect it, and your age in years only ticks over once your birthday has actually passed. This calculator handles all of that from a single input: your date of birth.

What is chronological age?

Your chronological age is the total time that has elapsed between the moment you were born and a given date — the standard measure used on official forms, in schools, in clinical assessments, and in law. It's usually expressed as completed years, plus the leftover months and days ("34 years, 2 months, 19 days"). That's exactly what this tool calculates, which also makes it a chronological age calculator in the sense teachers and clinicians use the term: precise to the day, with no rounding.

Chronological age is distinct from biological age (an estimate of how "old" your body is based on health markers) and from traditional counting systems like Korean age, where everyone gains a year on New Year's Day. When a form asks for your age, chronological age is always the one it means.

How the calculator works out your age

The tool compares your date of birth with the target date using the same calendar method you'd use on paper: subtract the days, then the months, then the years, borrowing from the next column whenever a subtraction goes negative. Borrowed days always come from the actual length of the previous month — 28, 29, 30, or 31 — and every leap year since your birth is counted, including the century rules that made 2000 a leap year but not 1900. There's no "divide the days by 365" shortcut anywhere, because that shortcut drifts by roughly a day for every four years you've been alive.

If you want to see the math itself, the full method is worked through in How Age is Calculated, and there's a practical walkthrough — including a spreadsheet formula — in how to calculate age with a date of birth.

Your age in months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes

Completed years are only one way to express an age. The calculator also converts the exact time span into every common unit, which is where the results get interesting:

UnitWhat it tells you
Years, months, daysYour formal age — the format official documents expect
Total weeksThe convention for infant age, and for tracking pregnancy milestones
Total daysMilestone spotting — a 10,000th day arrives around age 27
Hours & minutesThe numbers that make any age feel suddenly enormous

Because the totals come from the precise span between the two dates, they already include every leap day — so your age in days here will often differ slightly from a quick "years × 365" estimate. The calculator's figure is the correct one.

Age on a specific date — past or future

The "Age at Date" field turns the tool into an eligibility checker. Set it to a school enrolment cutoff to confirm whether a child will be five by 1 September. Set it to an application deadline to state your age accurately on a visa or exam form. Set it to a date years ahead to see when you reach pension age — or jump straight to the retirement age calculator for that. It works backwards too: pick any date in the past to know exactly how old you were when something happened.

Who needs a precise age calculation?

More people than you'd guess. Parents track a baby's age in weeks and months for feeding and development milestones. Teachers and school administrators verify ages against enrolment cutoffs. Speech-language pathologists and psychologists need chronological age to the day, because standardised test scores are normed by exact age bands. HR teams confirm ages for benefits and retirement planning, and legal and immigration paperwork routinely asks for age at a specific date rather than age today. And plenty of people just want to know how many days until their next birthday — the calculator counts that down automatically, or you can get the full breakdown from the birthday calculator.

Why use this age calculator over doing it by hand?

Manual age arithmetic fails in predictable places: borrowing the wrong month length, forgetting a leap year, or adding a year before the birthday has passed. A calculator makes those mistakes impossible — and this one adds three things most alternatives don't. It runs entirely in your browser, so your date of birth never leaves your device. It's instant, with no sign-up, ads, or interstitials between you and the answer. And it's transparent: every method it uses is documented in plain language in our guides, so you can verify any result yourself.

Completely free. No premium plans, no ads, no sign-up required.
Subtract your birth date from today's date column by column — days, then months, then years — borrowing from the next column when a result goes negative. Or skip the arithmetic: enter your date of birth above and the calculator does it instantly, with leap years handled.
Chronological age is the exact time since your birth — what this calculator measures and what official documents use. Biological age is an estimate of your body's condition based on health markers, and can be higher or lower than your chronological age.
Enter your date of birth and the calculator shows your total days alive alongside years, months, weeks, hours, and minutes. The figure includes every leap day, so it's more accurate than multiplying your age by 365.
