"Mental age" is one of psychology's most famous ideas β and one of its most misunderstood. It's the concept behind the original IQ formula, the reason IQ is called a "quotient" at all, and the engine of countless online quizzes today. Here's how mental age is actually calculated, what the number meant historically, and why modern psychology measures intelligence differently.
What mental age means
Mental age (MA) is the age level at which a person performs on a standardised set of cognitive tasks. If a child answers the questions that a typical 10-year-old can answer β regardless of their actual age β their mental age is 10. It's a comparison against age-group norms, not a property of the brain: the score only means anything relative to how large samples of children at each age performed on the same tasks.
The concept comes from Alfred Binet and ThΓ©odore Simon, who built the first practical intelligence test in Paris in 1905 to identify schoolchildren needing extra support. Their test arranged tasks by the age at which most children could complete them; a child's mental age was simply the highest age level they could handle.
The classic formula
In 1912, German psychologist William Stern combined mental age with chronological age β actual time since birth β into a single ratio. Lewis Terman later multiplied it by 100 to remove the decimals, producing the intelligence quotient:

Why the ratio formula was retired
The mental-age ratio works tolerably for children, because cognitive performance climbs steeply and steadily through childhood. Then it breaks:
- Adult ceiling. Cognitive test performance plateaus in the late teens. A 40-year-old doesn't answer twice as many questions as a 20-year-old, so dividing by chronological age makes adult IQs absurd β the formula would hand a typical 40-year-old an IQ of around 50.
- Uneven meaning. A two-year gap between mental and chronological age is dramatic at age 4 and trivial at age 16, yet the ratio treats them inconsistently.
Modern tests β the Wechsler scales (WAIS, WISC) and the current Stanford-Binet β use deviation IQ instead: your raw score is compared against your own age group's distribution, with the mean set at 100 and a standard deviation of 15. An IQ of 115 today means "one standard deviation above average for your age", not any ratio of ages. Mental age survives mainly as a teaching concept and, loosely, in some clinical descriptions of developmental level.
About online "mental age" tests
The quizzes that tell you your "mental age is 23" based on your taste in music are entertainment, not measurement. They have no age norms, no standardisation, and no relation to Binet's construct β they're personality-flavoured fun. Nothing wrong with that, but treat the result the way you'd treat a horoscope, not a test score. Actual cognitive assessment requires a standardised instrument administered by a qualified professional.
